Paris
Saint-Germain, the current leader of the French league, suffered a second
straight home defeat, losing 1-0 to Lyon. This is PSG's fifth loss of the
league campaign, leaving them six points ahead of Lens and Marseille, who are
in second place, with nine rounds of matches remaining. PSG defender Danilo
spoke about the team's shortcomings after the game, stating that there were
many things that they need to change beyond just their mentality. Danilo urged
his teammates to respond quickly and give their all, or risk finishing the
season empty-handed. Lyon punished PSG's slack defending with a slick move in
the 56th minute, as 18-year-old right-back Saël Kumbedi volleyed a pass across
the area, and 20-year-old forward Bradley Barcola slid the ball past Donnarumma.
PSG seems to be under increasing pressure from its fans after losing eight
games out of 19 overall in 2023. They face a tough trip to face Nice next
weekend.
Shortly
before the match against Lyon, Kylian Mbappé addressed the K-Soce team, a group
of PSG fans celebrating their 15th anniversary. The K-Soce team had been
involved in fan clashes in previous years, including a street brawl before a
Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb in 2012. Mbappé reassured them of
the players' commitment to the team.
PSG
was recently eliminated from the round of 16 of the Champions League and
knocked out of the French Cup by Marseille. Mbappé was unable to make an impact
on the game against Lyon and remains tied with Lille's Jonathan David on 19
goals at the top of the league's scoring charts.
The
game's start was delayed by 10 minutes due to Lyon's bus arriving late at Parc
des Princes stadium. Lyon coach Laurent Blanc, who coached PSG from 2013-2016,
left with a valuable victory.
In
other matches, Monaco fought back from a 2-1 deficit at halftime to beat
Strasbourg 4-3. Monaco is three points behind Marseille in the race for a
Champions League spot, with third place offering entry into the qualifying
rounds while second place guarantees automatic qualification. Lens currently
sits in second place ahead of Marseille on goal difference. Youssouf Fofana
scored a goal and was later sent off with a second yellow card, and Strasbourg's
Habib Diallo scored a late consolation goal.
Rewritten:
Jonathan David, the Canadian striker for Lille, did not manage to increase his
goal tally in the latest game, but his team still emerged victorious with a 3-1
win over Lorient. The victory propelled Lille to fifth place, ahead of Rennes,
in the race for a spot in the Europa League. Kosovo winger Edon Zhegrova was
the hero of the match, scoring twice in the 89th and stoppage time. He came in
as a late substitute for United States forward Tim Weah, who had returned from
injury. Lille winger Remy Cabella opened the scoring in the 13th minute after
being set up by former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes. After Ibrahima
Koné equalized for Lorient in the 78th minute, Gomes provided the assist for
Zhegrova's first goal. In other matches, seventh-place Reims defeated Nantes
3-0, while eighth-place Nice was held to a 1-1 draw by last-place Angers, and
Clermont won 2-1 against 19th-place Ajaccio with striker Grejohn Kyei scoring
two penalties, including the winner in stoppage time.
